Q1: We are so excited to finally be able to not only unleash this finale on the folks but also get to know this duo, VYYL. What can you go over with us as to who you both are? Where did VYYL come from?

A1: We met just over 3 years ago on a night out at a show our friends were playing, and we happened to strike up conversation and found we had a lot of common interests, mostly in the music scene. At the time Dylan was doing his DVIZION project, and I (Danica) was living in another city. We started talking more and created a relationship together and within about a month I ended up moving to Calgary. When that happened, Dylan took me under his wing and taught me everything I know about DJing and producing. We played off each other’s strengths and weaknesses very well, and after about a year we decided to create a duo. We were first named “M.O.B” but soon rebranded to something more fitting and unique due to multiple other artists having the same name. We decided on the name “VYYL” (pronounced ‘vile’) because when we would make a track, Dylan would say “this is vile!” So I started recognizing that word with our music and created a different way of spelling it to keep it from being taken by any other artists. I then created our first logo and boom!

Q2: You are from Canada, being our amazing neighbors to the north! In what ways does/has Canada been advantageous and beneficial in regards to music?

A2: Living in Canada has always been heavily inspiring due to the amount of talented artists we have out our back door! It’s a beautiful country with a lot to offer. We have yet to leave it but hope to soon enough when things settle down, we have a couple of places on our list to visit! Canada has an amazing music scene and it is so much fun to be apart of. Some seriously incredible festivals and more intimate events that keep things connected.

Q3: Since VYYL‘s fruition, what has been your favorite moment in your career thus far?

A3: It’s a hard toss-up between so many exciting moments we’ve had. One of our favourite moments was the day we released our Nirvana remix – Smells Like Trap Spirit. That same day we opened for Calcium at The Palace Theater in Calgary, which was our dream venue. Being able to debut that song live on the stage we always dreamed of being on was definitely a surreal moment that we will always cherish. We shared that night with all of our friends and had such an amazing time!

Q4: Your track Rise & Shine, out on The Goblins Lair is a personal favorite of mine. In terms of headspace and creative processes, what all went into that track?

A4: Honestly this song happened completely by accident. While trying to create the sound design in a project I was working on, I ended up stretching out a Hi-Hat. I liked how it sounded so much, I continued to warp and process the sound and it ended up becoming so strange that it didn’t fit into the project I was originally making it for – so I started something fresh, brought that sound in, and ended up warping it even more. Later that night I was watching videos about video games and they showed the opening of Half Life, and when I heard the character say “Rise and shine motherfucker“, I knew I had to sample that.

Q5: The Goblins Lair and Tavis in particular is not only extremely supportive of your music but he also is a pivotal piece in the VYYL project. How does this all tie together?

A5: Tavis has been one of the most supportive friends we’ve had since the early stages of VYYL. We loved watching The Goblins Lair take off and turn into such an important piece of the bass community. He is one person that has never tried to change our music or direction, and has always been honest and trustworthy throughout our entire relationship.  He signed our track The Forest and since then we’ve had 3 total releases with them (and more to come). We have so much in common with Tavis and feel as though The Goblins Lair became a home for us and our creativity. We all felt it was only fitting to take Tavis on as our manager, with a little guidance from Wes (Recall Network). He keeps us driven and helps steer us in the right direction, not only with music but life in general. A great friend that has quickly become family.

Q6: Your remix of Mikes Revenge’s (MR) track ‘ATL’, out on Nectar Collective recently was released and made a huge round. How did you guys link up with Mikes Revenge and when/how did you know that was the remix you wanted to make?

A6: I (Danica) have been friends through social media with them for a while and keep up with their music, so when they announced they were doing a remix competition, it piqued our interest. Wesley reached out to us with some more information and drive us to do this remix, and we really wanted to take on the challenge. We had never submitted to a remix competition before, and we actually almost didn’t even finish the song because we thought it wasn’t good enough. We ended up pushing through anyway and were insanely shocked to find out we won a spot on the compilation.  It was a really proud moment for us and we can’t thank the whole team enough for everything.

Q7: What is next in the realms of VYYL? Let your fans and listeners know what is to come!

A7: We have a lot of self-releases and collaborations we want to do this year. We also have our debut EP coming up soon (details to come). As we wait for shows to come back, we’re focusing a lot on pushing the envelope of our sound design, production quality, artwork, and creativity in general. Giving VYYL a 2021 facelift!

Q8: Who have you seen absolutely crushing the game in this hard and trying time? Give them a villainous VYYL shout-out!

A8: We have SOO many friends that are really killing the game lately. We have to give a shout-out to our boy Eyelander, he’s come such a long way in the last year and we are super proud to see his progress. Our friends Dobadlyy, Jvmpskare, Epitome, Wye Nawt, and countless others are all doing amazing things as well. There are so many artists we could list off here, but if you take a listen to our official Spotify playlist “The Bass Chamber”, we feature tons of up and comers that deserve so much more recognition for their talent. You can check out everyone we’ve had our eyes on there! Everyone we know right now is crushing their goals and it’s amazing to see so many people coming out of such a dark year with such a flame in their souls and chasing their dreams. We are ridiculously proud and excited for everyone.
